I have a desktop that runs 12.04. Recently (after n years of clicking on Ask me later), I decided to accept the update to 14.04. That didn't work at all: half the packages were missing - at a guess, the repository had already moved.

This is an old machine so I didn't want to jump to 18.04 immediately. I decided to try installing Lubuntu 14.04. It just came up with a black screen. I've tried the F6 and adding combinations of

  • nolapic

  • nomodeset

  • xforcevesa

  • vga=794 (1280x1024 resolution)

as suggested in other answers but still getting a black screen or one with dark red/blue/green vertical lines. Then I thought: maybe it is a problem with Lubuntu so I tried Ubuntu 14.04 - same problem. Xubuntu was the same too. Then I saw quite a few reports on 14.04 so I thought it might be fixed in 16.04 or 18.04. Unfortunately, the problem remains.

This also happens for SuSE and AntiX (Debian). On SuSE, it works on 11.x but not on 12.x. SuSE 11.x is the same vintage as Ubuntu 12.04.

The graphics driver is NVIDIA Riva TNT2. I have found this driver for linux. I don't know if it will help but the question is how do I tell the bootloader to use this driver.
