I have this small, 3.77 GB flash drive on me that I'm trying to get working, since according to GParted there isn't even a partition table set up for the unallocated space. I guess the drive is also write protected because when I select Devices-> Create partition table-> MSDos, I get an error saying "Can't write to /dev/sdb, because it is opened read-only." and "Error while creating partition table." Please help if you can, thanks!

Did you boot from that USB Flashdrive?

  • If you used dd or an installer that used dd to create flash drive install drive, then it is a hybrid DVD/flash drive. You have to erase beginning of drive. See: help.ubuntu.com/community/mkusb#Re-use_the_pendrive

  • In my experience, unlike gparted, the disks utility is able to create a partition table in that case. You may have to reboot before creating partitions.
