I messed up my "daily driver" laptop. I was trying out MATE on Ubuntu 18.04, and I tried switching from my dedicated NVIDIA graphics to the integrated Intel graphics. Now when the machine boots, it flashes two shades of gray, I get the MATE logo, and then a black screen with a small blinking cursor.

Any idea how I can recover this laptop without having to completely reinstall Ubuntu? I'm hoping the answer has something to do with booting from a live USB and editing something startup-related to undo the integrated graphics configuration.

UPDATE: to add to the fun, I can get a text terminal started with Ctrl-Alt-F1, and I can login...but less than a minute later, even that goes all black.

UPDATE 2: after spending hours on this, I gave up and went with the re-install.
