Memory problem: removed 2 sticks of ram and was able to boot but into recovery mode. I was given the option of upgrading to 18.10 so I picked that. I can boot into black screen (no graphics) as if I am running minimal server and log in.
During the upgrade to 18.10 I noticed that cinnamon was removed but that is OK as I hated cinnamon. However, it seems I did not get gnome or anything in the way of graphics. It has an AMD RX570 and it seems to have its driver installed as the system is running BOINC and processing a GPU task just fine. I checked by using another workstation. Apparently, the AMD graphics driver that allows BOINC to perform GPU tasks is not the same driver that handles the graphics display???
I am no expert on ubuntu but I have the original 17.10 CD that I can re-install but was wondering if there is something I can do to reinstall the graphics so the display and gnome desktop show up.
I did google "lost ubuntu display" for about 1/2 hour but it was a waste of time.
