I'm running 16.04 as a VM in VirtualBox 5.2.10 with 16.04 as host (the VM being my 'test' machine).

I don't seem to be able to access any USB drive or memory stick from the VM (although it does 'see' the wireless mouse). Is this normal with a VM?

  • Did you add guest additions to the Virtualbox app in the host?

  • You need to make sure that your user account in Ubuntu 16.04 is part of the vboxusers group in order to see USB devices. Pointing devices don't count.

  • @GeorgeUdosen and @Terrance So at Terminal I entered sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers 'username', logged out then back in and typed groups 'username' and vboxusers was listed - but still can't see them in VM.
