Please let me know if issuing "apt-get update" command on AWS EC2 ubuntu 14.04 machine upgrades the PHP version from 7.1 to 7.2? I assume that the command only updates the OS variables but not the software's installed but in my case my PHP version got upgraded. so I just want to confirm if my assumption is wrong.
14.04 apt upgrade php amazon-ec2

If you don't want PHP to get upgraded along with the rest of the system, you can pin the package.
