The device in question is an Epson WF-3640. I have been able to get this device to work as a network scanner / printer with every version of ubuntu since 14.04 but the previous path of installing the iScan bundle and changing the dll.conf / epkowa files in /etc/sane.d no longer seems to work.
Install of iScan bundle 1.04:

Lauching iScan prompts "Could not send to scanner. Check the scanner's status. I can print fine on the device."

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something
different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and
detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read
the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ,
manpages).
Any ideas how I can go at it to get the scanner to work again? atm I boot into a 16.04 System to scan but id prefer being able to switch to 17.10 entirely.
